Only 100 minutes long.
‘This production is extraordinary’
Rufus Norris. Artistic Director, Royal National Theatre
Revenge, suspicion and family intrigue light up the stage in this powerful, concise version of perhaps
Shakespeare’s most personal play.
Starring Mark Lockyer, thought by many to be one of the finest classical actors of his generation, as
all the characters, this stunning new production ‘leaves the watcher utterly spellbound’ (Rufus Norris).
Hamlet suspects his uncle of killing his father, he feels abandoned by his mother, and confused by
his feelings of obligation as prince whilst still a young man in love.
Without the usual accoutrements of complex set, costumes and other actors the play – and
Shakespeare’s words – truly sing.
Expertly edited to 100 minutes straight through whilst losing none of the plot, characters or treasured
quotes, in this version the Play really is the Thing.
‘I cannot remember receiving Hamlet with more open ears and more abandon’
Rufus Norris, Artistic Director, Royal National Theatre.

A bewitching solo performance by Mark Lockyer, a masterclass in pacing and emotional clarity.
The Guardian ★★★★Mark Lockyer plays all the parts in The Play’s The Thing. A One Person Hamlet at Wilton's Music Hall. If ever there was a tour de force this is one. Not to be missed
Bill Russell Reviewsgate ★★★★A sharply crafted bare-bones solo take on Hamlet - director Fiona Laird and heroic solo cast member Mark Lockyer are to be congratulated for presenting the Bard’s best in such audience-pleasing style. It is excellent.
Everything Theatre ★★★★Mark Lockyer’s performance is a tour de force - This is a Hamlet as a tightrope act, balancing Shakespeare with bold reinvention, a masterclass in what theatre can achieve when talent, vision, and text collide.
London Pub Theatres Magazine ★★★★A masterful show. The Play’s the Thing is an ambitious work, skillfully done. There cannot be too many performers who can make such a show work, but Laird has found one of the ones that can, Mark Lockyer is truly an excellent choice to bring her vision to life.
The Upcoming ★★★★A thrilling experience, perhaps even a once-in-a-lifetime event – what a treat to see a top Shakespearean actor at the height of his powers.
Plays To See ★★★★Lockyer wanted this Hamlet to be accessible to anyone, especially the younger generations, and it is. You don’t need a literature degree to understand it. You just need to be willing to listen. And once you do, it becomes hard to stop.
A Young(ish) Perspective ★★★★★
